ESRI Data from MVRPC
Description
If you spend any time working with maps, you will encounter ESRI. They are the de defacto standard for mapping within large organizations and municipalities. If there is a GIS department, there is likely an ArcGIS instance around somewhere. Learning to work with ArcGIS data is crucial if you intend to work with data provided by municipalities.
This example introduces the Esri Leaflet plugin. Additionally, it introduces:
- the Layers Control
- the difference between base maps and overlays.
- some alternate basemaps, including the delightful Stamen Watercolor set and a good looking satellite layer from ESRI.
- using ESRI dynamic map layer images.
Data Source
The data we've used on this map comes from the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC). They have an ArcGIS portal of resources that you can consume. Many of these products can be used in Leaflet via the ESRI plugin.
Here, we are using two particular map image layers, Projected Population Change 2000-2040 and Projected Employment Change 2000-2040.
Enhancements
- Maps like this are useful when they can tell a story. Could you link the layer visibility to an information block with a legend and description?
